9.6.26 Huddle

Teacher notes! Don’t feel obligated to read through every question with your group. Pick a few that will bring about a good discussion. If you only get to one of the passages, that’s fine! The purpose of this is to help you and your team grow spiritually.

Opening Discussion

  • What was something you grew up believing but later found out you were wrong? (i.e. Buffalo wings actually aren’t buffalo; It’s Beranstain Bears, not Beranstein; we don’t become angels when we die)

Read and Discuss

If you have more time and want to read the context in which this takes place, start at Luke 24:13. Brief summary: Jesus joins two of his disciples (not the 12) walking along the road. They don’t recognize Him, and they are discussing the events surrounding His death.

Luke 24:22-27

22 Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb, 23 and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”

25 He [Jesus] said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.

  • Why did the two disciples not understand the events that were taking place?

  • Even after checking out the women’s story, what didn’t the disciples believe?

  • Jesus uses some harsh words to these two men. Why does he call them foolish and slow to believe?

  • What are some things that people may be slow to believe about the Christian faith?

  • What are some things that you were slow to believe?

  • Jesus revealed how the Law and Prophets of the Old Testament pointed to Him. Why do some people miss the Old Testament's revelation of the Messiah?

  • Jesus wants us to know and understand the scriptures. How might that change the way you read the Bible?

    • What can you start praying before you read the Bible?

  • If there are things that you find difficult to understand in Scripture, what do you do to understand them?

Luke 24:28-32

28 They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther. 29 But they urged him, “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?”

  • Has there ever been a time where the Lord was doing something in your life and you didn’t realize it until later?

    • What was the factor that let you know it was the Lord working through those things?

  • What was at the heart of the disciples through this whole interaction?

  • Why do you think they were open to receive Jesus’ teaching?

  • Why are some people closed off to hearing the gospel?

  • What is something you can do to help tell others about the good news of Jesus?

  • How is the Lord wanting you to respond to these verses?

Discipleship Questions

  • What can you do this week to help you understand the Bible better?

  • Who can you help understand the Bible better?

  • Who can you start reading the Bible with to help you understand the Bible better?

  • What can you do this week to share the gospel with someone?

Prayer Focus

There are many things in our life that can keep us from seeing how Jesus is working. It may be our own doubts, worries, hurt, or just the busyness of life. Other times we may be seeking Him out, and just not see Him even when He’s right in front of us! Sometimes it is just our own foolishness that gets in the way.

Pray that the Lord would open your eyes to see Him in the everyday things of life. Pray that as you read scripture, He would open it up to you as He did to the disciples on the road. Ask the Lord to make scripture come alive in your life so that you would desire His word more and more in your life.

Next, pray about those who are with you along the road. Who are you currently walking with through life that needs to understand the love of Jesus more? Is there someone going through a hard time that you can help walk them through? Pray that the Lord would give you opportunities this week to share His love with them.

Then next week, talk about how the Lord answered that prayer.
