Teacher notes! Don’t feel obligated to read through every question with your group. Pick a few that will bring about a good discussion. If you only get to one of the passages, that’s fine! The purpose of this is to help you and your team grow spiritually.

Opening Discussion

  • When you face a problem, how do you go about solving it?

Read and Discuss

Ephesians 4:1-3

1 Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

  • What does Paul mean by the “calling you have received?”

  • If someone asked you what your calling was, how would you respond?

  • What would you say is the calling of every follower of Jesus?

  • Why are humility, gentleness, and patience important for living out what Jesus has called you to do?

  • What does it look like to bear with one another in love?

    • How does this bring about unity?

  • What is the unity of the Spirit?

  • How should brothers and sisters in Christ treat each other?

  • Is there someone in your life who you don’t feel at peace with?

    • What steps do you need to take to make peace in that situation?

    • Note: Making peace with another person who has wronged you, especially in the case of abuse, does not mean that you need to go to that person or put yourself in a harmful situation. Sometimes it may be just forgiving them so you no longer have to carry that burden.

Matthew 18:15-18

15 “If your brother sins against you, go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 But if he won’t listen, take one or two others with you, so that by the testimony of two or three witnesses every fact may be established. 17 If he doesn’t pay attention to them, tell the church. If he doesn’t pay attention even to the church, let him be like a Gentile and a tax collector to you.

  • How is Jesus’ way of dealing with conflict different from what the world tells you to do?

  • How have you seen this done in a way that helped bring about a good resolution?

  • Why does Jesus tell us to distance ourselves from people who don’t want to repent?

  • Jesus uses the term “brother” which means a fellow believer in Jesus. Why is that an important distinction to make?

  • Why is resolving conflict difficult?

    • Why is it necessary?

  • If someone came to you and showed you your fault/sin/wrongdoing, how would you want them to approach you?

  • When you go to show someone their fault, how can you do it in a way that brings about healing and doesn’t put them on the immediate defense?

  • Who do you need to resolve conflict with this week?

Discipleship Questions

  • What is one step you need to take this week to resolve a conflict with someone?

  • Who is someone you are currently avoiding that you need to forgive?

  • Who can you show humility and gentleness to this week?

Memorize it!

Matthew 18:15

15 “If your brother sins against you, go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother.

Pray About It!

Brothers and sisters in Christ need to have unity to carry out the calling Christ has put on their life. What relationships are hindering you from living out your calling?

Pray about those relationships. Ask the Lord to show you how to resolve that conflict.

Are there any relationships where you’ve tried to resolve things but the person continues to be unrepentant?

Pray that the Lord would give you wisdom in following Matthew 18 so the person will come back into a right relationship with you and Jesus.
