8.2.26 Huddle

Teacher notes! Don’t feel obligated to read through every question with your group. Pick a few that will bring about a good discussion. If you only get to one of the passages, that’s fine! The purpose of this is to help you and your team grow spiritually.

Opening Discussion

  • What was something good your parents passed on to you?

Read and Discuss

Ezekiel 18:18-22

18 “As for his father, he will die for his own iniquity because he practiced fraud, robbed his brother, and did among his people what was not good. 19 But you may ask, ‘Why doesn’t the son suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity? ’ Since the son has done what is just and right, carefully observing all my statutes, he will certainly live. 20 The person who sins is the one who will die. A son won’t suffer punishment for the father’s iniquity, and a father won’t suffer punishment for the son’s iniquity. The righteousness of the righteous person will be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked person will be on him.

21 “But if the wicked person turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all my statutes, and does what is just and right, he will certainly live; he will not die. 22 None of the transgressions he has committed will be held against him. He will live because of the righteousness he has practiced.

  • What do these verses teach us about our sin and our parents' sin?

  • Even though we won’t have to suffer the punishment for our parents’ actions, how can a parent’s wrong actions still hurt their children?

  • What are some habits and things you do that you’d like to pass to your children or the next generation?

  • Verse 21 tells us that if the wicked person turns from all the sins they committed, then they will live. What are practices you have in place to help you turn from your sin?

  • How can you keep Jesus at the center of your life instead of just trying to not sin?

Titus 2:1-8

1 But you are to proclaim things consistent with sound teaching. 2 Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. 3 In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good, 4 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands, so that God’s word will not be slandered. In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled 7 in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. 8 Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that any opponent will be ashamed, because he doesn’t have anything bad to say about us.

  • Paul makes several lists about how people who follow Jesus are supposed to be. What sticks out to you about those lists?

    • What qualities do you have from those lists?

    • Which ones do you need to work on?

  • How can you be self-controlled in everything?

  • “Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching.” How can you do this daily?

    • As mentioned above, how can you keep Jesus at the center of these things, without turning your focus to the lists?

  • If all followers of Jesus lived the way Paul lays out in this passage, what might change in our city?

  • What daily practices can you implement to live a life centered around Jesus?

    • How can you teach those things to young men and women around you?

Discipleship Questions

    • If you aren’t, who is someone you could talk to this week about mentoring?

  • What are some past family hurts you need to forgive so that you can move forward?

Memorize it!

Ezekiel 18:21 “But if the wicked person turns from all the sins he has committed, keeps all my statutes, and does what is just and right, he will certainly live; he will not die.”

Prayer Focus

This week re-read the Titus passage each day. Start praying that your walk with Jesus would start resembling those things. Take a few moments right now and pray, “Lord make me more…” then start listing the things in this passage.
