Opening Discussion

  • What’s something that brought you joy this week?

Read and Discuss

Genesis 2:18, 20-22

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him.”

20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. 22 Then the Lord God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.

  • What does this passage teach us about the Lord?

  • What does this passage teach us about human beings?

  • What is significant about the creation of the woman?

  • Why does the man need a helper?

  • How can the role of men and women be different without one being better than the other?

  • How have people twisted the helper role of women into being subservient to men?

  • The same word for helper in this passage is used to describe God multiple times in the Old Testament. What does that tell us about the helper role?

Luke 10:38-42

38 While they were traveling, he entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord’s feet and was listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.”

41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.”

  • Why did Martha perceive Mary as being in the wrong?

  • Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to Him teach which would have been the role of a disciple. Why would that have been a rare thing for a woman to do in that culture?

  • Why does Jesus say it is necessary to sit and learn from Him?

  • How do we get so wrapped up in serving the Lord that we sometimes forget to spend time with the Lord?

Discipleship Questions

  • What are some ways you can serve the Lord this week without neglecting being in His presence?

  • What are some ways you can sit at the feet of Jesus and learn from Him this week?

Memorize it!

Genesis 2:20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him.

Prayer TACOS

Thanksgiving: Who are some women who have helped you grow in your faith? Thank the Lord for them.

Amazement: From the beginning of creation, the Lord made male and female to help each other. Worship the Lord for his foresight to create us to make one another better.

Confession: What are some ways you have demeaned others based on their gender or other outside thing that they couldn’t help? Ask the Lord for forgiveness and to help you to see people as He sees people.

Others: How can you be an encouragement to someone who is hurting, especially in this area of men and women’s roles in the church? Ask the Lord for wisdom and opportunity to talk to someone this week to encourage them.

Self: Do you have wrong views of women in leadership in the church? How would you know? Ask the Lord to give you guidance this week as you search the scriptures to see what He really thinks about the role of women in the church. Ask Him to correct any wrong thoughts that you may have.
